Periodontal Disease
Periodontal disease
Also known as gum disease, is when there is bacterial infection on the gums and tissues that support the teeth. There are two major stages of periodontal disease: gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis affects only the gums and is reversible if properly treated. If not treated, it will lead to periodontitis where now bacteria penetrate into deep pockets of gum tissue where the bone is also affected.
Treatment: Scaling and root planning is the first recommended treatment for patients diagnosed with periodontitis. This procedure involves removing plaque and calculus from underneath the gums. In severe cases, surgical treatment may be needed instead with the periodontist.
